The Story of an Icy Fall and the Threat of Death

2. DEATH CAME TO ALL MEN – _ Genesis 2-3

It all began with Adam – His disobedience caused death which threatens and controls all of us today. Here’s the story starting in Genesis, chapter 2:

Gen. 2:8-9 The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. And out of the ground the Lord God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Gen. 2:16-17 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.

Gen. 3:6-7 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food . . . . she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked;

3:11-12. And God said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?”

17. Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’:
“Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life.

Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you,

In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground,
For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, And to dust you shall return.”

Thus, the pronouncement of DEATH came upon all men That has resulted in the defiling nature of sin which has continually corrupted man’s character. Ever since that fateful day, the history of mankind has been filled with a deep seated fear of death

The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. I Cor. 15:56

That’s the BAD NEWS !

But, out of His mercy, God sent His Son to rescue mankind. A new power has come on the the scene – it is Jesus Christ, who has come to relieve mankind of death’s eternal threat:

“. . . . that through (Christ’s) death He might destroy [the devil ] who had the power of death, that is, [Satan], and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. Hebrews 2:14b-15
But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
I Cor. 15:57
The last enemy that will be destroyed is death. I Cor. 15:26

But, how do we escape the eternal threat of death? How do we find deliverance from it?
The answer is found in the words that Jesus said, found in John, chapter 3:

4. THE FAITH ISSUE – “Born Again?”

Jesus and Nicodemus (born again?) John 3:

1-2. There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”
Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3

4. Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
5-7. Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.

Being “born” of the Spirit is a spiritual transformation that occurs when you admit your sins and pray to Christ, asking for His forgiveness. When you do that, this is what happens:

But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: John 1:12
Your Act of Faith is Necessary

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. John 3:17

Is this the only way to be saved from eternal death? If you believe what Jesus said, then hear His words:

Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. John 14:6

Believing in Jesus Christ is the only means of your salvation. It is the key issue of faith necessary to be “born again”. When you trust Him with all your heart as your Savior, the Bible tells us that your name is written in the “Lamb’s Book of Life”. For, without your name written in God’s book of Life, you will never get into heaven.

But there shall by no means enter [the eternal Holy city] anything that defiles. . . . . but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. Revelation 21:27

Not by our voice, not even by the number of the hairs on our head, although Gods knows that too. But by your name which is written in the Book of Life, will you be recognized and admitted into heaven.

Your name must be written in the Book of Life –

Revelation 3:5
He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will never blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.

Revelation 21:27
But there shall by no means enter [the eternal Holy city] anything that defiles. . . . . but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

THE BIG QUESTION: What happens if your name is not written in the Book of Life?

And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:15

IS YOUR NAME WRITTEN THERE? If you are born-again, it will be. But you can’t write it yourself, only God does that. He does that because He loves you and calls you special, and He does that by His grace alone. You cannot earn it or merit it. He alone gives it to those who ask. . . . BUT YOU MUST ASK HIM.

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

When you ask Jesus Christ, the Son of God, to come into your life, two things happen:
1. Your name is written in the Book of Life
2. Your citizenship is transferred to heaven, and this world is no longer your primary residence. Heaven is your new destiny. I hope you’re looking forward to it.
